How to Plant a Water Lily
Planting a water lily is simple and rewarding. Follow these easy steps to help your plant grow healthy and bloom beautifully.
Step 1: Choose the Right Container
Use a wide, shallow aquatic planting pot or basket. A container that is 25-40cm (10-16inches) wide works well for most water lilies.
Step 2: Add Aquatic Soil
Fill the container with heavy garden soil or aquatic planting soil. Avoid using regular potting mix, as it floats and can cloud the water.
Step 3: Plant the Rhizome
Place the water lily rhizome at a 45-degree angle with the growing tip facing toward the center of the pot and slightly above the soil surface. Gently cover the roots with soil, leaving the crown exposed.
Step 4: Add a Layer of Gravel
Cover the soil with a thin layer of washed gravel or small stones. This helps keep the soil in place and prevents fish from disturbing the plant.
Step 5: Lower the Pot into Water
Slowly place the pot into your pond or water container. Start with the crown 15-30cm (6-12inches) below the water surface. As the plant grows, you can gradually move it deeper according to the variety.
Step 6: Provide Plenty of Sunlight
